Autoportrait 64 is an interactive self-portrait inspired by Super Mario 64, designed to run on an actual Nintendo 64 console.
In 1996, as I was entering adolescence, I was fascinated by the opening sequence of Super Mario 64. It allowed players to manipulate and distort Mario’s face in all sorts of ways, showcasing the new possibilities of real-time 3D graphics. This fascination with a malleable virtual face resonated with a period of change and uncertainty in my own life, marked by a complicated relationship with my body and appearance.
In Autoportrait 64, I replace Mario’s head with my own and put my image in the hands of the public, who are free to distort it, alter it, or glitch it. The self-portrait thus becomes an exercise in transformation and sabotage, in which the vanity of self-representation confronts the fear of seeing one’s own image fall apart.
